Texas Greek Picnic The Third Featured Sorority is ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INC. – “Scholarship, Sisterly Love, Service, Finer Womanhood”. Founded Jan. 16, 1920 @ Howard Univ., the sorority was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948); to form adult and youth auxiliary groups; to centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma (ΦΒΣ)
The year was 1920. It was the start of the decade, shortly after World War One, and a time of great prosperity for the country. Women were called dames, dolls, or the cat's meow. At the beginning of the decade, women still wore long skirts but the "Roaring 20s" brought a new look of short skirts and smartly coiffed sho...rter hair. Racial tensions were high and quotas set for immigrants coming into America. The Klan was very active during this period. The Harlem Renaissance was acknowledged as the first important movement of black artists and writers in the US. On January 16, 1920, the Volstead Act became effective, heralding the start of Prohibition and on August 18th of the same year, Tennessee delivered the crucial 36th ratification necessary for the final adoption of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. The worst and longest economic recession to ever hit the United States would define the end of the decade-the Great Depression. It was within this environment that Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded. Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. It was the ideal of the Founders that the Sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the founding principles of the organization. Founder Viola Tyler was oft quoted to say "[In the ideal collegiate situation] there is a Zeta in a girl regardless of race, creed, or color, who has high standards and principles, a good scholarly average and an active interest in all things that she undertakes to accomplish." Since its inception, the Sorority has chronicled a number of firsts: **Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in Africa (1948) **Form adult and youth auxiliary groups.(these groups are still active and legal). **To centralize its operations in a national headquarters **To be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Zeta's national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change. A nonprofit organization, Zeta Phi Beta is incorporated in Washington, D.C. and in the state of Illinois. The dues and gifts of its members support the Sorority. Over the years since the sorority's inception, Zeta Phi Beta has chartered hundreds of chapters and initiated thousands of women around the world. Zeta has continued to thrive and flourish while adapting to the ever-changing needs of a new century. Despite the Great Depression, discrimination and segregation and a host of other challenges, Zeta has continued to hold true to its ideals and purpose, for, as stated by one of the Sorority's founding members: "…I believe that no [other] organization could have been founded upon principles that were so near and dear to all of our hearts." Kappa Alpha Psi , a college Fraternity, now comprised of functioning Undergraduate and Alumni Chapters on major campuses and in cities throughout the country, is the crystallization of a dream. It is the beautiful realization of a vision shared commonly by the late Revered Founders Elder Watson Diggs; John Milton Lee; ...Byron K. Armstrong; Guy Levis Grant; Ezra D. Alexander; Henry T. Asher; Marcus P. Blakemore; Paul W. Caine; Edward G. Irvin and George W. Edmonds. It was the vision of these astute men that enabled them in the school year 1910 - 11, more specifically the night of January 5, 1911, on the campus of Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, to sow the seed of a fraternal tree whose fruit is available to, and now enjoyed by, college men everywhere, regardless of their color, religion or national origin. It is a fact of which KAPPA ALPHA PSI is justly proud that the Constitution has never contained any clause which either excluded or suggested the exclusion of a man from membership merely because of his color, creed, or national origin. Ronald Green has a strong grounding in financial policy and public service. He is uniquely qualified to give Houston the steady financial hand it demands to weather the nation’s current economic crisis. Elected twice by overwhelming majorities to Houston City Council, At-Large Position Four, Green has earned a ...reputation for common sense fiscal policies that safeguard vital public services. His work has helped improve city programs, from competitive bidding and capital projects to pension protection and customer service. He is a champion for effective financial management of the city’s enterprise funds, equipment acquisition, and fair housing initiatives. And his efforts on behalf of quality of life issues have won praise from every corner of the community. Green has served as chairman of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Committee, overseeing the city’s annual budget of nearly $4 billion — more than many states — and holding the line on new taxes and fees. His work has touched on regular financial and operations reports, strategic purchasing, and municipal court reform. He has been a member of the Transportation, Infrastructure and Aviation Committee and the Ad-Hoc Committee on Legislative Affairs. As Controller, Green will help control spending and act as a check-and-balance on the competing interests before the executive and legislative branches of city government. He will have the independent authority to conduct performance reviews of the city bureaucracy to make sure Houston has a modern, efficient city government worthy of the taxpayers who foot the bills and expect high-quality, low-cost customer service in return. A 1988 graduate of the Houston Independent School District's High School for Health Professions, Green earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston, as well as a law degree from Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas, the District of Columbia, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Green is also a licensed real estate broker. Green is a founding partner of his own law firm and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., 100 Black Men of America, Inc., UH Alumni Organization, UH Black Alumni Association, Thurgood Marshall School of Law Alumni Association, Government Finance Officers Association, National Association of Bond Lawyers, Houston Lawyers Association, and Leadership Houston Class XXIII. He is married to Judge Hilary Harmon Green, Justice of the Peace, Harris County Precinct Seven, Place 1.
