While back in college, my wife waited tables in this little Italian restaurant. It was the kind of place where you could picture a mob boss stirring sugar into his espresso, while the chef, Gabriela, stirred various sauces simmering away in the kitchen. It had off label wines that Total Wine has never heard of, and Enyo kept track of the bills, drank wine and sang opera. Enyo and Gabriela were the owners. She hand made everything. There was a printed menu, but the real menu was the specials that changed daily and this is what you ordered from. Gabriela called the people that order from the printed menu, "Spaghetti Eaters," and is wasn't a compliment. This restaurant was Dante's in Spartanburg, SC. It was the best Italian I have ever had. The reason I tell this story is that I created 1-10 Dante scale. Babymoon rates a solid 9 on the Dante scale. I had the lasagna and the noodles were handmade and almost as thin as Gabriela would make them. The flavors were perfect. Tomatoes, savory, meaty, delicious. The portion was generous. The atmosphere, comfortable and cozy, but just a little noisy. It was a work lunch, so I could not sample the wine or spirits menu though. This is as close as I have found to Dante's to date. I will be definitely going back.
